SOUTH DEVON RAILWAY BIDS FOR WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY'S FORMER GWR PANNIER TANK 0-6-0 6412

The South Devon Railway has made an offer to the West Somerset Railway for the purchase out of ticket Pannier Tank 6412. Full details of the offer and the reasons why a sale of the loco to the SDR would make sense for the West Somerset Railway can be read by clicking on this link to the West Somerset Railway Association website. www.wsra.org.uk/6412a.htm. The West Somerset Railway Association committee meet in early September to consider the offer.

6412 would be very appropriate motive power for the SDR. The 64XX class were primarily designed for branch line passenger use and were, of course auto fitted. A 64XX would make a third auto fitted locomotive for the SDR who already have 1420, which was auto fitted from new, and 5526 which has been auto fitted by the SDR. Several 55XX tanks were auto fitted in GW/British Railways days, although 5526 was not one of them.  6412 was purchased for preservation by the Dart Valley Railway in the mid-60's and was in use in the first season of the DVR in 1969. It also worked on the Paignton line for a few years in the 1970's before being sold to the West Somerset Railway.

In more recent time 6412 visited the SDR for a gala along with 6430.
