Repairing some of the recent criminal damagePhoto © JBrodribb 2017

A wide variety of goings–on to report this week. Repairs to the criminal damage are almost complete, with the Buckfastleigh Station Group carrying out repairs in the Station Master's office and to the booking hall doors; Gary and Chris are seen in action. Work on the the former is mainly to make the supply of tea, coffee and biscuits more secure – this is a working railway, after all.

Over in the yard, the Permanent Way gang have been working at reconnecting the four yard roads to the three–way point. Most work is needed to road No 4, which is being extensively realigned to reduce the curvature, and the photo shows the road railer excavating the track bed for the new alignment.

Installing the Velocipede in the SDRT MuseumPhoto © JBrodribb 2017

In the museum, we are now working on installing the velocipede as an important exhibit, and moved it inside on Monday 30th January. Mike and Gary adjust its position – it was an interesting conundrum to fit it in. It was very well repaired last year by workshop volunteers, and we are very grateful for this. Incidentally, the Pump Trolley is most unwell at the moment, and probably can't be used this season, if at all. It was damaged when being moved out of the way for the new siding installation, and full repairs are likely to prove expensive, although they are quite feasible. If you have any views on what could and should happen please contact the museum curator, John Brodribb, on 07909 780035 or by

Up the line the Cutting Back gang has been continuing work below Paper Mill bridge, and Robin Dadson’s two photos show the position at the start and end of the day. They are doing a great job, and if you would like to join them on a Wednesday give John Harris a call on 01364 653082.

And finally work continues at Staverton on the SDR Association's TOAD brake van. The photos show Paul and Clive surveying the floor – or the underframe in the absence of the floor – and work on the verandah door. Much yet to do, but you can be sure that it will be done to the highest standard. Thanks to Rod Budd for the photos.

Best wishes
